Laval University inaugurates the Centre de tennis Synex Assurance - Université Laval, which includes 16 tennis courts—8 indoor and 8 outdoor—as well as 6 outdoor pickleball courts.
This project is part of a major transformation of the campus and reflects the University’s commitment to opening up further to the city while meeting the needs of both the university community and the regional population. “Open since May 11, this tennis centre enhances Laval University’s sports infrastructure, serving our university community, high-performance athletes—including the Rouge et Or teams—and the general public. These additional courts will increase accessibility to the sport in complement to the local offering, while promoting long-term health and regional vitality,” said Laval University Rector Sophie D’Amours.
The construction of the tennis centre was made possible through close collaboration with the Government of Quebec, which contributed $20 million through the Secrétariat à la Capitale-Nationale.
“Sports infrastructure plays a key role in the attractiveness and vitality of our communities. Thanks to the new Synex Assurance–Laval University Tennis Centre, the Quebec City region is gaining modern facilities that will support both high-performance sport and recreational participation. This is a sustainable investment that will benefit the entire Capitale-Nationale community,” said Minister of Finance and Minister Responsible for Infrastructure, Eric Girard.
The Minister of Employment and Minister Responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, Jean-François Simard, added: “The Capitale-Nationale deserves infrastructure that matches its dynamism and ambitions. With this new tennis centre, we are offering our community a modern venue that will promote sports participation, support athlete excellence, and enhance Quebec City’s visibility on the national and international stage. This is an investment in our quality of life, in our youth, and in the future of our region.”
“What magnificent facilities! This centre is a tremendous addition for the community, and I am convinced it will delight many citizens as well as the entire university community. It will improve accessibility for enthusiasts while supporting the growth and development of these sports. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this ambitious and transformative project, which positions Quebec City as a leading destination for racquet sports events,” added Kariane Bourassa, Minister Responsible for Sport, Recreation and the Outdoors.
A tangible and promising impact
Nearly one month after opening, the Centre de tennis Synex Assurance - Université Laval is already generating strong enthusiasm. An initial attendance report highlights a very positive response from the community, with more than 1,000 people having already created accounts to explore the new facilities.
“The tennis centre supports the development of high-performance sport, helps position Quebec City as a must-visit destination, and makes tennis and pickleball accessible to as many people as possible. Whether you’re just starting out or a high-level athlete, everyone will find their place here,” said Julie Dionne, Director of the Sports Activities Service.
“At Synex, we believe strong organizations are built by investing in projects that create a lasting impact in their communities. Associating our name with the Centre de tennis Synex Assurance - Université Laval represents more than a partnership—it is a commitment to excellence, the next generation, and the development of strong, dynamic communities,” said Yan Charbonneau, President and Chief Vision Officer of Synex Business Performance.
Designed to meet the highest professional standards, these facilities can host national and international competitions. The first summer will notably feature the Challenger Banque Nationale de Québec, a brand-new men’s professional tournament on the ATP Challenger Tour, taking place from August 17 to 23. This event will help reposition Quebec City among Canada’s premier destinations for professional tennis.
